North = South

When History Becomes a Story, Understanding Begins

North = South begins with a simple question: what are the consequences of limiting how history is taught?

History is often presented as separate dates, events, personalities and chapters. Yet when those fragments are placed back into chronological order, relationships begin to appear. Cause and effect become clearer. Events that once seemed isolated begin to look like parts of a continuing story.

Beginning with slavery and the Civil War, North = South examines Lincoln and emancipation, Northern and Southern involvement in slavery and racial inequality, Reconstruction and its abandonment, the Lost Cause, segregation, education, selective memory, Native American history, policing, George Floyd, white privilege and Black Lives Matter.

The purpose is not accusation for its own sake. It is understanding.

The book grew from a question raised by an essay written by the author's daughter at seventeen: if seeing the suffering of one Black man could change the understanding of millions of people, what might happen if generations were given a fuller understanding of the history that produced the world they inherited?

Perhaps getting along does not begin with agreeing. Perhaps it begins with knowing.

When History Becomes a Story, Understanding Begins

North = South is written for readers who may know the individual events of American history but have never been shown clearly how those events connect.

It is intended to complement conventional history texts, not replace them. Its particular purpose is chronology: helping students follow the road from slavery through emancipation, Reconstruction, segregation, institutional inequality and the racial questions that remain alive in the present.

The historian's task is not to decide whether an event is old enough to matter; it is to understand how events connect across time.

For teachers and students, the book offers a way to connect the history contained in textbooks with questions young people are already encountering in the world around them.

What do we Place Inside a Child Before The World Gets There?

It grows through repetition, example, correction, language, expectation and the seemingly ordinary things children hear so often that they eventually become part of the way they think.

Formed by Seven Years Old gathers the aphorisms, verses, quotations, biblical passages and sayings that helped shape one family across generations and places them back into the lived circumstances in which such wisdom becomes useful.

The book moves through time, discipline, action, purpose, speech, conduct, judgement, conscience, relationships, mercy, resilience and the worthwhile life. Classical wisdom is not presented merely to be admired or memorised. Each lesson is unpacked, connected to experience and returned to the practical question:

How should this help us live?

This is a book for parents trying to form character, teachers concerned with more than examination results, adults who still hear the voices that formed them, and younger people beginning to decide what kind of individuals they intend to become.

“There are books that entertain, books that inform, and books that instruct. More rarely, there are books that attempt something deeper: to recover a way of forming human character.”
